Inese Westcott | Roots

We are so honored to present the beautiful work of local artist Inese Westcott this month at Material Wit. Known for her large format tree scapes, Inese harnesses natures eternal beauty and majesty. In this collection Inese speaks to the strength of a tree as it relates to humanities deepest connection to place and the individuals need to belong. Read thoughts from the artist below.

Artist Statement

There’s a quiet strength in the way a tree remains—rooted through storms, shifting seasons, and the passage of time. In this series, I reflect on what it means to belong—the deeply human, instinctive need to be connected to place and to something greater than ourselves.

Each painting begins as a meditation on home, memory, and the invisible threads that bind us to the land. I think about the roots we’re born with and the ones we grow later in life—how we carry both, even when we move across landscapes and time zones.

Having spent half of my life in Latvia and half in the United States, I’ve come to see my story as one of layered belonging. These works quietly celebrate the richness of different cultures, the tension and harmony between them, and the way identity can take root in more than one place.

Though rooted in personal reflection, these paintings are open spaces. Like the underground network of a tree, much remains unseen—but felt. I invite the viewer to pause, to look closely, and to find their own meaning in the lines, textures, and forms.

These paintings are a still point.

A place to return to.

To remember what grounds you,

to sense what quietly endures beneath the surface,

even as everything around you shifts.
