Our featured artist Khristy Kim expands on her popular seascapes series sharing new work this July at Material Wit. With realism accuracy Khristy captures the feeling of being afloat and untethered. In deep blues, greens, black and white these works showcase open ocean and the horizon. This long view of open water evokes emotion like a mirror, reflecting our inner turmoil or serenity.
Artist Statement
I've had a great feeling of uncertainty lately, surrendering to a brewing storm coasting in an unanchored ship adrift with no decipherable horizon. This will not do for I am a hopeful person therefore I will stay afloat and stay alert, I will turn the worries into action. I will put on my life vest, I will check the radar, I will ready the lifeboat. I will frame these feelings, giving them a border so they don't consume all of me.
I find as a creator that I have been brought back to studying water time and time again for its truly the only way to express all parts of myself. Be it calm or angry, chilled or warm, shallow or deep, serene or dangerous, fresh or salty, free or damned.
Wherever these pieces find you, I hope they take you to a place you need and keep you floating on. Also, remember to put on your life jacket before helping others.
